The Best AI SEO Tools in 2026

Updated Sep 8, 2026
Short answer

Choose an AI SEO tool by the job: Percy for conversations and saved actions grounded in your Search Console data; ChatSEO for a broader SEO agent with CMS integrations; Surfer or Frase for content workflows; Jasper for brand-led marketing production; Ahrefs or Semrush for research across a wider search and backlink dataset.

On this page

The best AI SEO tool is the one that helps you finish the work your site actually needs. A content team writing twenty articles has different requirements from a founder trying to understand why a pricing page stopped bringing in visitors.

Disclosure: this guide is published by Percy, formerly TurboConsole. The comparison below uses the providers' public product descriptions, reviewed on September 8, 2026, alongside our own product's behavior. It is not an independent hands-on ranking or a controlled comparison of SEO results. The recommendations about fit are our assessment.

How to choose an AI SEO tool

Start with a question you need answered this week. A useful evaluation asks:

  • Does it have the right data? Your own Search Console history, competitor research, a backlink database, and live page content answer different questions.
  • Can you inspect the evidence? Look for specific URLs, queries, date ranges, and an explanation of what remains uncertain.
  • Does the output help you finish the task? A proposed title, a brief, or a saved action should be usable without reconstructing the entire analysis.
  • What happens after the recommendation? Check how you review, publish, and follow up on the change.
  • Does the plan cover your workload? Compare site limits, research usage, seats, exports, and integrations using each provider's current pricing.

A fluent answer alone does not demonstrate good SEO judgment. Ask the tool to distinguish an observed traffic change from a possible explanation for it.

1. Percy — Search Console analysis and actions

Percy connects to Google Search Console with read-only access. Start in chat, ask about a page or a traffic change, and follow the evidence into a more specific question. Useful recommendations can become saved actions, with drafted changes you can review and implement.

For example, your first question could be:

Compare my last 28 complete days with the previous 28. Which three pages deserve attention? Show the page and query evidence, explain what you can and cannot infer, and give me one next action per page.

That prompt is an evaluation task, not a promise that every site has three obvious opportunities. A site with very little search history should receive a different answer from an established site with thousands of daily clicks.

A good fit: founders and website operators who want help deciding what to do with their own search data, then want to continue the conversation and keep track of the work.

Check before choosing: Percy does not replace a dedicated backlink database or edit your CMS. You publish changes yourself. Its action workflow can check whether changes landed and follow subsequent performance, but a before-and-after change does not prove causation.

Cost: plans start at $29/month for one site. The 7-day trial requires no credit card and has usage limits. For an eligible new account, the trial clock begins with the first saved connected-site answer or when you open a completed report with actions. Percy is a paid product after the trial.

Try Percy with your own Search Console data. Start with a page you care about and judge the answer by whether you can act on it.

2. ChatSEO — an SEO agent with CMS integrations

ChatSEO's product page describes a conversational SEO agent covering keyword research, competitor analysis, audits, writing, and publishing through CMS integrations. Its site lists Search Console, Google Analytics, and CMS connections.

A reason to compare it: you want to move from research to publication within an agent workflow. Evaluate the specific CMS you use, how proposed edits are approved, and what the connected data supports. We have not independently verified its customer results or benchmarked its advice against Percy.

3. Surfer — content optimization

Surfer offers a Content Editor, content auditing, and workflows for search and AI visibility. Its public product description now covers a broader content cycle than scoring an individual draft.

A reason to compare it: you have a page or draft ready to improve and want editing guidance in that workflow. Test whether the suggestions improve clarity and answer the reader's question. A higher content score is not itself evidence of increased rankings or sales.

4. Frase — content research through publishing

Frase describes a platform for auditing, researching, writing, and publishing content, including AI search visibility monitoring and a review queue.

A reason to compare it: your bottleneck is getting researched content through an editorial process. Test one topic that requires knowledge of your business. Assess factual accuracy, the usefulness of the draft, and the amount of editing required. Check its publishing support for your CMS.

5. Jasper — brand-led marketing content

Jasper focuses on marketing agents and production workflows, with shared brand voice, style guidance, and product context through Jasper IQ.

A reason to compare it: you need consistent marketing assets across people or channels. Evaluate an actual campaign or content assignment. Separately check what evidence supports any SEO recommendation; brand consistency and search analysis are different requirements.

Ahrefs offers Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Site Audit, AI content tools, and AI visibility tracking through Brand Radar.

A reason to compare it: you need to research competitors, keywords, and links beyond the properties you own. Use your actual market in the evaluation. Check the relevance and coverage of returned data, along with the limits on the reports you will use regularly.

7. Semrush — a broader marketing platform

Semrush combines keyword and competitive research, rank tracking, backlink analysis, technical site health, content tools, and AI visibility features.

A reason to compare it: your team needs several of those workflows in one platform. Map your required jobs to the current plan and any separate products or limits. Breadth is useful when your team will use it; evaluate the tools you need rather than the total feature count.

Run the same task before you pay

Choose one task and give each shortlisted tool the same input. If you are comparing connected analysis, use the same site, dates, country, device, and search type. If you are comparing content tools, use the same brief and source material.

For Search Console analysis, check four things in the answer:

  1. Evidence: are the page, query, and date range identifiable?
  2. Diagnosis: does it separate what changed from why it might have changed?
  3. Action: is there one specific next step you can review and complete?
  4. Follow-up: can you return to the work and check the outcome?

For example, falling clicks with stable impressions can make CTR worth investigating. It does not prove the title is the cause: query mix, device mix, rankings, and changes in the results page also matter. Google's traffic-drop guidance explains how to investigate possible causes.

Keep a short record of the useful output and the editing or verification time. Choose on the value of completed work, not the length of the response.

Want to use your existing AI assistant?

You may only need a way to bring Search Console data into Claude or another assistant you already use. Our free Search Console MCP server provides that connection. Follow the Search Console to Claude setup guide for installation and suggested first questions. Your assistant may have its own subscription or usage costs.

Percy is the separate option when you want a dedicated SEO chat workspace with saved actions and follow-up on your site. Connect your site, ask one useful question, and decide whether the answer earns a place in your workflow.

A note on AI search visibility

Tracking mentions in AI answers is a different task from analyzing Google Search Console performance. If that is your main requirement, check each tool's supported engines, prompts, markets, and tracking frequency. A single generated answer is a sample, not a complete measure of your brand's visibility.

Frequently asked

+What is the best AI SEO tool?
The right choice depends on the work. Percy focuses on analyzing your connected Search Console data through chat and saving actions. ChatSEO offers a broader SEO agent workflow with CMS integrations. Surfer and Frase offer content optimization workflows, Jasper supports marketing content production, and Ahrefs and Semrush provide broader research platforms. Test a real task before choosing.
+What is the best AI tool for SEO optimization?
If you already know which page to edit, compare the editing and content guidance in Surfer or Frase. If you need to decide which of your existing pages deserves attention, try a Search Console analysis in Percy. Check whether the advice matches your page and audience before implementing it.
+What is the best AI tool for writing SEO content?
Compare Frase and Surfer for SEO content workflows, and Jasper when brand consistency across marketing assets is the main requirement. Percy can help draft specific page changes in a conversation grounded in your site's data. Every draft needs review for accuracy, originality, and audience fit.
+Is there a free AI SEO tool?
Our open-source Search Console MCP server is free to run; your chosen AI assistant may have separate charges. Percy is a separate paid product with a 7-day trial, no card required, followed by plans from $29/month. Percy does not have a permanent free product tier. See pricing for trial usage limits.
+What's the best AI SEO tool for backlinks?
Compare the backlink research in Ahrefs and Semrush using the same domains. Check the useful referring domains and link evidence each returns. Search Console data and an AI-generated outreach draft are not substitutes for a dedicated backlink dataset.
+Can AI SEO tools fully automate SEO?
They can automate parts of research, drafting, monitoring, and sometimes publishing. That does not establish that a recommendation is correct or will increase revenue. Percy does not edit your CMS: you review and publish changes, then use its action workflow to check implementation and follow performance.
